WestJet Rewards and Triangle Rewards Are Live: Earn Rates, Conversion Ratio, and More

A practical breakdown of the new WestJet-Triangle partnership for Canadians: how linked accounts earn, which cards improve the return, what gets excluded, and when converting WestJet points to Canadian Tire Money makes sense.

WestJet Rewards and Triangle Rewards Are Live: Earn Rates, Conversion Ratio, and More

The WestJet Rewards x Triangle Rewards partnership went live on March 25, 2026. Canadians can now link the two programs and earn across both ecosystems.

The core feature is not the conversion option. It is the ability to earn WestJet points at Canadian Tire family stores and earn Canadian Tire Money on eligible WestJet purchases once accounts are linked. The one-way transfer mechanic from WestJet points to CT Money also exists, but the conversion ratio is weaker than standard WestJet redemption value.

This article covers the full earn-rate structure, the conversion math, the exclusion list, and how holding specific credit cards changes the return.

What is now live

Once you link your WestJet Rewards and Triangle Rewards accounts, you can:

  • earn WestJet points at participating Triangle-banner stores
  • earn Canadian Tire Money on eligible WestJet purchases
  • convert WestJet points into Canadian Tire Money

The participating retail banners currently include:

  • Canadian Tire
  • Party City
  • SportChek
  • Mark's / L'Equipeur
  • Atmosphere
  • Pro Hockey Life
  • Sports Rousseau
  • Hockey Experts
  • L'Entrepot du Hockey
  • participating Sports Experts locations

Both WestJet and Canadian Tire Group operate across all Canadian provinces, which gives the partnership broad geographic reach. The retail banner list also covers multiple spending categories — general merchandise, sporting goods, and apparel.

The exact earn rates

The table below summarizes every earn mechanic currently available through the linked partnership.

Two timing details apply:

  • WestJet points from participating stores typically post within 48 hours
  • Canadian Tire Money on WestJet purchases posts within 30 days after each completed flight segment, not at booking

Why this matters for Canadians

The partnership connects two loyalty programs that already cover a large share of Canadian consumer spending. Canadian Tire Group operates over 1,700 retail locations across the country, and WestJet is one of the two largest domestic carriers.

For members who shop at Canadian Tire, Mark's, SportChek, or Atmosphere, the linked partnership turns existing retail spend into an airline currency. For members who fly WestJet, it adds a retail rewards layer to existing flight spend.

Neither program requires a co-branded credit card to participate at the base earn rate, though holding one does improve the return (detailed below).

Linked earning vs. the conversion option

The partnership includes a one-way conversion from WestJet points to Canadian Tire Money. The conversion ratio is less favourable than the standard WestJet redemption rate, which makes the linked earning side of the partnership the stronger value proposition.

Conversion details:

  • 120 WestJet points = $1 CT Money
  • minimum conversion: 2,400 WestJet points
  • Canadian Tire Money cannot be converted back into WestJet points

For comparison, the standard WestJet Rewards redemption framework (covered in our WestJet Rewards Guide):

  • Standard WestJet booking redemptions value at approximately 100 WestJet points = $1
  • Taxes, fees, and post-booking extras redeem at a weaker rate of roughly 105 to 115 points = $1

At 120 points per dollar, the CT Money conversion sits below both of those benchmarks.

Quick math

WestJet pointsTypical WestJet travel valueCT Money conversion value
2,400 pointsabout $24$20
6,000 pointsabout $60$50
12,000 pointsabout $120$100

The conversion option does extract some value from WestJet points, but it consistently delivers less than a direct WestJet flight redemption. Members who expect to book WestJet travel in the near term will generally get more value by keeping points in WestJet Rewards.

When the conversion might still be worth it

Despite the weaker ratio, the conversion serves a purpose in specific situations:

1. Small or orphaned WestJet balances

Members with a low WestJet points balance who do not plan to fly WestJet in the foreseeable future can convert to CT Money rather than leave the balance unused. The minimum conversion threshold is 2,400 points.

2. Preference for retail flexibility

The CT Money currency is redeemable across all Triangle-banner stores, covering categories from automotive parts to apparel. Members who prefer retail value over airline value may find this acceptable despite the lower return.

3. Topping off a Triangle balance for a planned purchase

Members approaching a specific CT Money target for a planned retail purchase can use the conversion to close the gap.

4. Expiry management

WestJet Rewards points expire after 12 months of account inactivity. Converting a portion to CT Money before expiry preserves some value. Triangle Rewards points, by comparison, expire only if the account is inactive for 36 months.

In general, the conversion functions best as a secondary use case rather than a primary strategy.

Credit card stacking

Holding a co-branded credit card on either side of the partnership doubles the base earn rate in that category.

At participating stores (WestJet RBC Mastercard)

Linked members who pay with a WestJet RBC Mastercard earn:

  • 2 WestJet points per $2 of eligible pre-tax spend (1 base + 1 card bonus)

This doubles the standard linked earn rate. It also creates a new everyday earning channel for WestJet points outside of direct flight purchases.

Full card details are available on the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard page. A broader comparison of Canadian credit cards is on our credit card comparison page.

On WestJet purchases (Triangle credit card)

Linked members who pay directly with a Triangle credit card earn:

  • 1.0% CT Money (0.4% base + 0.6% card bonus)

The base and bonus portions may post at different times. The base amount typically appears first, with the credit card bonus following later.

Important exclusions and fine print

The partnership terms contain several exclusions that limit which purchases qualify for earning.

WestJet-side exclusions

Canadian Tire Money on WestJet applies only to WestJet Eligible Purchases, and those exclude:

  • UltraBasic fares
  • Member Exclusive fares
  • contracted fares
  • reward redemptions
  • tour operator fares
  • charters
  • other carrier-marketed codeshare flights
  • Sunwing Vacations and Vacances WestJet bookings
  • in-flight purchases
  • government-imposed taxes and fees

Notably, UltraBasic — WestJet's lowest fare class — is excluded entirely. Members purchasing UltraBasic fares will not earn CT Money through the linked partnership.

CT Money earning applies only to the linked member's travel portion

On multi-passenger WestJet bookings, the CT Money earn is calculated based on the fare value attributable to the linked member's own travel only, not the full booking total. This reduces the effective return on family or group bookings where only one traveller has a linked account.

Store-side earning is on pre-tax spend

At participating stores, the WestJet points earn is based on eligible pre-tax spend, not the full post-tax amount.

Linking processing time

Linking or unlinking accounts may take up to 24 hours to process. Purchases made while the request is being processed do not qualify for linked earning. Members should link accounts well in advance of any planned purchase.

Practical examples

The following examples illustrate how the earn mechanics apply to common purchase scenarios.

Example 1: $200 Canadian Tire purchase without a WestJet RBC card

  • Eligible pre-tax spend: $200
  • Linked earn rate: 1 WestJet point per $2
  • Result: 100 WestJet points (approximate travel value: $1.00)

This is incremental earning — retail spend that previously generated no airline value now contributes to a WestJet Rewards balance.

Example 2: $200 SportChek purchase with a WestJet RBC card

  • Eligible pre-tax spend: $200
  • Linked earn rate: 2 WestJet points per $2
  • Result: 200 WestJet points (approximate travel value: $2.00)

The WestJet RBC Mastercard bonus doubles the base earn rate, making retail purchases more productive for members already accumulating WestJet points.

Example 3: $500 eligible WestJet flight paid directly with a Triangle credit card

  • Eligible spend: $500
  • CT Money earn rate: 1.0%
  • Result: approximately $5.00 in CT Money

The return is modest in dollar terms, but it stacks on top of any WestJet Rewards earning that the booking already generates through the member's WestJet account.

Example 4: Converting 6,000 WestJet points to CT Money

  • WestJet points converted: 6,000
  • Conversion ratio: 120 points = $1
  • Result: $50.00 in CT Money
  • Equivalent WestJet travel value of those points: approximately $60.00

The conversion results in a $10.00 loss compared to using the points for WestJet travel. This illustrates why the conversion is best reserved for situations where WestJet travel is not planned.

Bottom line

The WestJet Rewards x Triangle Rewards partnership adds a new cross-earning layer to two widely used Canadian loyalty programs.

The primary value is linked earning:

  • WestJet points earned at Triangle-banner stores (1 point per $2 base, 2 per $2 with WestJet RBC Mastercard)
  • Canadian Tire Money earned on eligible WestJet purchases (0.4% base, 1.0% with Triangle credit card)

The conversion mechanic — 120 WestJet points = $1 CT Money — is functional but delivers approximately 17% less value than standard WestJet flight redemptions. It is best treated as a secondary option for orphaned balances or expiry management.

The partnership produces the best returns when members hold the relevant co-branded credit card and keep earned points in their original program for redemption.
