American Express Canada has added a notice stating that Etihad Airways Etihad Guest will no longer be available as a Membership Rewards transfer partner in Canada effective June 20, 2026.
Eligible Canadian cardmembers must complete any transfers to Etihad Guest by that date.
This follows the broader Amex-Etihad transfer-partner removal reported in other markets, but Canada has its own deadline: June 20, 2026, not June 30.
What is changing?
Etihad Guest is being removed from American Express Membership Rewards Canada as an airline transfer partner.
Until the deadline, Amex Canada still lists Etihad Guest transfers with the following terms:
| Transfer detail | Amex Canada listing |
|---|---|
| Transfer ratio | 1,000 Membership Rewards points = 750 Etihad Guest miles |
| Minimum transfer | 1,000 Membership Rewards points |
| Transfer increments | 100 Membership Rewards points |
| Estimated transfer time | 10 business days |
| Canadian deadline | June 20, 2026 |
The long transfer time is important. Amex Canada says eligible cardmembers must complete transfers by June 20. If you are trying to make a final transfer, waiting until the deadline is not a good plan.
The Canadian transfer ratio is not 1:1
Much of the U.S. coverage says Amex transfers to Etihad Guest at 1:1. That is not the Canadian ratio.
For Amex Canada, the current listed ratio is 1,000 Membership Rewards points = 750 Etihad Guest miles.
That means a Canadian transfer is already less efficient than Aeroplan, Flying Blue, British Airways Club Avios, or Marriott Bonvoy in simple ratio terms. The program can still be useful in specific cases, but the math needs to work for an actual itinerary.
For comparison:
- Aeroplan: generally 1:1 from Amex Canada
- Flying Blue: now 1:1 from Amex Canada
- British Airways Club Avios: generally 1:1 from Amex Canada
- Etihad Guest: 1:0.75 from Amex Canada until removal
That makes Etihad Guest a niche transfer partner for Canadians rather than a default option.
Why Canadians may still care
Etihad Guest has a useful partner network even though Etihad is not part of a major airline alliance.
Etihad's official partner list includes airlines that Canadian travellers may recognize, including:
- Air Canada
- Air France
- KLM
- American Airlines
- ANA
- Korean Air
- Royal Air Maroc
- SAS
- Virgin Australia
For Canadians, the most relevant angle is not only Etihad's own Canada-Abu Dhabi flying. It is also the ability to redeem Etihad Guest miles on selected partners when pricing and availability line up.
The challenge is that partner availability, booking rules, and call-centre processes can be less straightforward than booking through Aeroplan, Avios, or Flying Blue. Etihad Guest can be useful, but it is not the easiest program for casual redemptions.
Should you transfer before June 20?
Most Canadian cardholders should not transfer just because the partner is leaving.
Transfers make sense only if:
- you have confirmed award availability
- the Etihad Guest price is clearly better than booking through another program
- you understand the taxes, fees, and change rules
- you can wait for the transfer to process
- you are comfortable leaving points in Etihad Guest if the award disappears
Transfers make less sense if:
- you only want to preserve optionality
- you do not have a specific Etihad Guest redemption in mind
- Aeroplan, Flying Blue, or Avios can book the same trip at a reasonable price
- you are counting on partner availability staying open for 10 business days
American Express Membership Rewards points are more flexible before transfer. Once moved to Etihad Guest, they cannot be moved back to Amex.
Watch the timing
The stated Amex Canada deadline is June 20, 2026.
The estimated transfer time is 10 business days.
Those two details should be read together. If you are planning a final Etihad Guest transfer, build in processing time and do not assume a same-day transfer will post before the partner is removed.
The safer approach is:
- Search and confirm the Etihad Guest redemption first.
- Compare the same route through Aeroplan, Flying Blue, Avios, and paid fares.
- If Etihad Guest is still the best option, transfer only the number of points required.
- Leave a buffer before the June 20 deadline.
Better alternatives for most Canadian Amex cardholders
For most Canadian travellers, the stronger Amex Canada airline transfer partners remain:
- Aeroplan for Air Canada, Star Alliance, and many non-alliance partners
- Flying Blue for Air France, KLM, SkyTeam, Promo Rewards, and some partner awards
- British Airways Club Avios for oneworld, short-haul awards, Qatar Airways, Iberia, and other Avios pathways
Those programs have stronger Canadian use cases, cleaner transfer ratios, and more familiar booking flows.
Etihad Guest can still be worth checking for Abu Dhabi travel, selected partner awards, and cases where Etihad has better access to its own premium cabins than partner programs. It should be treated as a specific-use program rather than a general transfer destination.

How this affects Etihad travel from Canada
Etihad's Canadian relevance increased when the airline announced nonstop Calgary-Abu Dhabi service. Etihad Guest remains one way to book Etihad flights, and the program may offer access to seats that are not available through every partner.
However, Canadians can also approach Etihad awards through other programs depending on availability. Aeroplan has historically been a major Canadian pathway for Etihad redemptions, though availability can vary and should always be checked directly before making plans.
If you are travelling to Abu Dhabi, the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia, or Africa, Etihad Guest may still be worth searching. The transfer deadline simply means Amex Canada will no longer be a direct source of Etihad miles after June 20.
Bottom line
Etihad Guest is leaving American Express Membership Rewards Canada as a transfer partner on June 20, 2026.
The key Canadian details are:
- the current ratio is 1,000 Amex MR = 750 Etihad Guest miles
- the minimum transfer is 1,000 Amex MR
- transfers must be in 100-point increments
- Amex Canada lists an estimated transfer time of 10 business days
- eligible cardmembers must complete transfers by June 20, 2026
This is a reason to review any near-term Etihad Guest plans, not a reason to move points speculatively. For most Canadians, Aeroplan, Flying Blue, and Avios remain cleaner Amex transfer options unless Etihad Guest prices a specific confirmed award more favourably.
